Kaspersky Warns APAC Retailers of Rising Cyber Threats Following IoT Refrigeration Attacks in Europe
Adrian Hia, Managing Director for the Asia-Pacific region at Kaspersky, has issued a warning regarding the recent cyberattacks on supermarket refrigeration systems across Europe, which resulted in direct physical damages including lost goods, declining sales, and store disruptions. Hia emphasized that although these incidents occurred thousands of miles away, the underlying conditions are highly relevant to the Asia-Pacific region.
A recent report highlights that rapid urbanization in emerging economies, combined with the systematic growth of retail logistics and e-commerce networks, is driving continuous demand for advanced refrigeration systems across the region. As the market adopts Internet of Things monitoring, energy-efficient systems, and sustainable refrigerants, the increased connectivity demands heightened cybersecurity measures.
The retail sector is increasingly targeted by cyberattacks. The Kaspersky Security Bulletin 2025 focusing on retail and e-commerce revealed that 22.20 percent of retailers faced device threats, while 8.25 percent encountered ransomware. The number of unique business-to-business users in the retail sector experiencing ransomware detections surged by 152 percent compared to 2023. Furthermore, Kaspersky’s forecast for 2026 suggests an expanding attack surface on the consumer front through artificial intelligence shopping assistants, chatbot data, and image searches, alongside fraud exploiting tax and trade rule changes, with a particular focus on targeting small and medium-sized retailers.
Hia advised APAC retailers to view the European IoT incidents as an early warning rather than an isolated issue. He noted that connected refrigeration systems and other operational technologies require the same stringent regulations applied to payment and customer data. This includes auditing all connected devices, preventing direct internet exposure, enforcing strict authentication for remote access, implementing network segmentation, and establishing pre-planned operational responses for tampered systems. “The causes of the attacks are still under investigation, but the clear lesson for us is that if a device can be controlled remotely, it can also be attacked remotely,” Hia stated.
